Music News- To honor 21 years of being at the forefront of the folk protest tradition, Appleseed Recordings will release a powerhouse triple album set exploring two decades of their most revolutionary work, featuring new recordings from Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Donovan, Tim Robbins, John Wesley Harding, Tom Russell + more. Across 57 tracks total, each disc of “Appleseed’s 21st Anniversary: Roots and Branches” serves as a beacon of the label’s longstanding devotion to three philosophies: truth telling, preserving our wisdom keepers both past and present, and keeping the legacy of roots music alive for future generations.
Although steeped in the history of traditional folk, roots, and world music, the themes on “Roots and Branches” ring especially true in our present moment. Tom Russell offers a searing new take on Bruce Springsteen’s “Across the Border,” recorded firsthand on the New Mexico/Mexico line; social worker Anne Hills takes a harrowing look into the heroin epidemic on “Needle of Death”; Tom Morello reimagines AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds” to name check US foreign policy and “fake news”; and John Wesley Harding’s own 12 year-old daughter appears on “Scared of Guns” to recite NRA donation figures, updating the original with crunchy guitars and the voice of a new generation. Founded in 1997, Appleseed Recordings is the independent, internationally distributed label helmed by activist and attorney Jim Musselman. Devoted to releasing socially conscious contemporary, folk, and roots music, the label has earned Grammy Awards and the dedication of numerous musical legends, including 20 Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Their releases have soundtracked the ups and downs of our modern history, covering themes both timely and timeless – from 9/11 and strong opposition of the Iraq War, Northern Ireland’s fight for independence, and the eternal struggle for human and environmental rights – with a portion of profits from many releases going towards the progressive organizations that help Appleseed put their philosophy into action.
Music News- 2018 is the 20th Anniversary of Lucinda Williams’ critically acclaimed, Grammy Award-winning, highly-influential masterpiece Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. To celebrate the milestone year for this milestone work, Ms Williams will embark on a select twelve-date, ten-city tour where she will perform the album in its entirety, followed by a second set of songs from her celebrated career. The tour will primarily take place in the Northeast starting on November 2nd in Collingswood, NJ (Philadelphia market) and will include stops in Boston, New York, Toronto and Chicago.
The stories of the making of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, and how long it took, is the stuff of legend. The changing producers, the re-recording, the revolving list of musicians only add to the folklore surrounding the album’s creation. However it came to be, one thing remains true, Williams never wavered on her vision for this masterpiece, and what she envisioned changed music on a multitude of levels.
Following its release, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road was named Best Album of 1998 in the Village Voice’s annual “Pazz & Jop” critics poll and received a 4-star review in Rolling Stone,while garnering critical praise throughout the press. The album went on to win the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The influence of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road is immeasurable, and it is considered, much like Williams’ 1988 self-titled album, one of the cornerstones of what is now called Americana. Rolling Stone ranked it #304 on their list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
Earlier this year, the anniversary of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road and its impact was the subject of a feature in Billboard, among others, and a thoughtful, insightful essay about its influence by Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield in Stereogum.
Williams will be joined on the tour by her incredible, long-time backing band Buick 6, featuring Butch Norton on drums, David Sutton on bass and Stuart Mathis on guitar.
Music News - Rock guitar legend Eric Clapton will release his first ever Christmas album, Happy Xmas, next month.
The album, which will feature a cover illustration of Santa Claus by Clapton, is a mixture of Holiday standards, including "White Christmas," "Silent Night," and "Away in a Manger," as well as an original new track, "For Love On Christmas Day". Clapton's rendition of "Jingle Bells" is dedicated to "the memory Avicii," due to the guitarist's admiration for the late DJ.
"I had in my head that these holiday songs could be done with a slight blues tinge, and I started to figure out how to play the blues lines in between the vocals," Clapton said. "I got it down and one of the most identifiable songs on the album, the one that became the foundational style, is 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Clapton co-produced the new album Simon Climie, with the guitarist also sketched the album cover featuring Clapton dressed as Santa Claus.
Today, Villagers are pleased to unveil new single 'Fool', taken from the forthcoming fourth album The Art Of Pretending To Swim, due for release on September 21st via Domino. 'Fool' is a romantic battle-cry from the centre of a technological dystopia. The video, directed by Bob Gallagher takes the lyrics as a starting point for the narrative: "So here is my bleeding heart... Will you take the pain away?" Gallagher explains further: "The video is a surreal take on a marriage proposal, which is the ultimate gambit in love. The scenario pushes how much Conor's character is willing to overlook his partner's shortcomings, and convince himself that everything is fine. You could call it foolishness but you could also consider it a kind of optimism, striving to see the best in a situation."
Following the exquisitely sparse, intimate aura of 2015's Darling Arithmetic, Conor O'Brien's new record reconnects with the multi-faceted approach of Villagers' 2010 album debut Becoming A Jackal and 2013's {Awayland} while adding a new-found soulfulness, rhythmic nous and dazzling panoply of sonic detail, both analogue and digital, creating feverish moods while writing effortlessly accessible tunes. Balanced with subtle aspects and lyrical themes that embrace existential fears and hopes in this desperate, technologically-centred dystopian age, The Art Of Pretending To Swim is the most brilliantly realized Villagers album to date.
The album was written, produced, mixed and primarily performed by Conor O'Brien in his Dublin studio. O' Brien has a string of accolades under his belt including two Ivor Novello Awards (the most recent being 2016' s Album Award for Darling Arithmetic ), two Mercury Music Prize nominations and is also a previous winner of Ireland ' s Choice Music Prize. Music News- While on the road for his "Boarding House Reach" tour, Jack White made a special visit to the Tesla factory in Fremont, CA yesterday afternoon, giving the Tesla staff a free concert which was broadcast to Tesla employees around the world. Prior to the concert, White toured the manufacturing plant and was given a test ride in Tesla's new Model 3 Performance at the factory's test track.
"I am a huge fanatic and supporter of everything Tesla has been doing since day one," says White. "I'm proud to say I was one of the first Model S owners in Nashville, which I think is the greatest automobile ever made. It's been a thought of mine for a few years now that I would love to do a free concert for the employees at the Fremont factory. I believe that what Tesla is doing is so important for the future of how we look at car design itself. The added benefits of its help towards fixing climate change and taking the world away from the internal combustion engine are incredible. Making cars that are safer for the occupants and others on the road also fulfill the pioneered dreams of automobile entrepreneur, Preston Tucker, which ultimately is the definition of the American dream. I'm very excited to play for Tesla's employees who are doing so much good for the progression of technology and the world right now."
Tesla and Musk remain the center of current controversies. California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health is still investigating working conditions at the Fremont factory, following accusations of unsafe practices. Musk has also faced severe criticism for union-busting tactics and disingenuous public statements. Recently, Musk came under fire for Tweeting from his personal account that he's arranged funding to take the publicly traded company private. After that Tweet, Tesla became the subject of a SEC investigation.
Music News- Multi-instrumentalist and global sensation Tash Sultana today released a hypnotic new single entitled "Free Mind" from her forthcoming debut album 'Flow State' (out 8/31, via Mom + Pop). (listen below) The mesmerizing new track is a startlingly compact offering with a message that packs a punch, and it directly follows previous 'Flow State' anthems "Salvation" and "Harvest Love," as well as Tash's recent US festival appearances at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands.
"'Free Mind' was a song written over a couple of years," says Tash. "It was pretty much three different songs that I couldn't figure out how to put together until one day when I was in the studio it kind of just fell into place. I don't usually write songs that are 3 minutes and 30 seconds because I find that super challenging, but I feel like I have said what I needed to say. 'When will my mind be free from all the chains that hold me down?'"
'Flow State' has already earned co-signs from NPR Music, Consequence of Sound and Pigeons & Planes, who dubbed her "a guitar god, a master of loop pedals, and well on her way to breaking into the mainstream," and called lead single "Salvation" a "slow-burning, irresistible offering." Billboard said of the new music, "Sultana leaves nothing on the table."
Music News- A blistering while soothing SoCal anthem, Winnetka Bowling League ’s “On The 5” captures the feel of dazzling sunshine and baked asphalt in a melancholy love song custom made for blasting on the freeway. The track, released August 9th via RCA, now has a video, which premiered this morning. “An L.A. song through and through, it certainly sounds like a hit.” Directed by Zack Sekuler and starring Elisha Yaffe (who played Lance on AMC’s Better Call Saul), the video was filmed along Ventura Blvd and at Will Rogers State Park in Santa Monica.

“On The 5” is from east coast-er (Seaford NY) Matthew Koma’s newest group, and Winnetka Bowling League’s first release from a forthcoming debut EP. Recently signed to RCA Records , they are relatively new arrivals to the Los Angeles music scene. Formed by brothers and featuring a loose collection of young L.A. musician friends, their five track debut self-titled EP will be released on September 21st and displays an impressive knack for crafting finely tuned guitar pop bursting with cinematic Golden State imagery. Music News- Dance Gavin Dance frontman, Tilian Pearson, is excited to share his new single, “Cocky”, out today via Rise Records. The track is an upbeat, infectious alt-pop anthem, bound to be a staple on summer playlists. The accompanying music video is also out today, which features Tilian and his love interest on a picturesque road trip throughout San Bernardino and Crestline, California. Watch it below from MNN.

Music News- Today, Papdosio released the title track, “Content Coma” off their new record that arrives September 7. Content Coma has Papadosio pushing their boundaries as a band both in and out of the studio. This results in the band’s most experimental and progressive-rock leaning record to date. NC's Papadosio has released two other tracks from their new album; “ Pool of Stars ” and “Distress Signal”.
In addition to the new album, the band is preparing to head out on a large national tour that will support the release of the new record. The tour will include coast to coast stops including New York City, Chicago, LA and everywhere in between. The band will finish out 2018 with a New Years Eve show in Nashville.
For the first time in their career, the band has gone into a recording studio where they recorded the drums, grand piano and bass. Originally, the band created and hosted their musical ideas and thoughts on the online collaborative platform, Splice . There they began their process with over 30 ideas for this record.
Music News- Rodrigo y Gabriela have announced the release, today their first new music in over four years. "Cumbé" is available now via Rubyworks/ATO Records at all digital music retailers and streaming services.
Recorded in session at Rodrigo y Gabriela's Lumbini Studio in Ixtapa, Mexico, "Cumbé" - which means the dance of people of color , and, in this instance, also pays tribute to the Cumbia music of Colombia - marks an exciting first glimpse of the instrumental guitar duo's hugely anticipated fifth studio album, due to be recorded in October and arrive at last in early 2019. Music News- Phish's Curveball festival, which was booked to start up tomorrow, has been cancelled. The festival was to run at Watkins Glen International racetrack in Watkins Glen, NY. Severe flooding occurred in the area over this past week resulting in the New York State Department Of Health officials to declare the water supply in the Village of Watkins Glen; which includes the festival site, unsafe for human consumption.
Phish issued a statement expressing disappointment over the situation and fans who had arrived to stay overnight. Campgrounds will close at noon tomorrow. Read the following from the band-
Dear friends, our Phish family..
The four of us are writing this from directly behind the stage at Watkins Glen. We were about to walk onstage only moments ago for our traditional soundcheck jam for Curveball when we were told the heartbreaking news that due to the unsafe water conditions in the Village of Watkins Glen, our beloved festival is being canceled.
We are still in shock. The entire site is already set up and ready to go after literally months of work by our beloved hardworking crew, many of whom have been here for weeks. Our families are here, our gear is set, our tents are up. We keep waiting for someone to come over and tell us that there is a solution, and that the festival can go on. Unfortunately, it is not possible.
We are so terribly sorry for the inconvenience that this is causing so many of you. We hope from the bottoms of our hearts that at the very least this news will reach you before too much disruption takes place in your personal lives. We know that people traveled far, at great expense. We understand that people are missing work, and changing their schedules around.. we wish so much that there was some way that this wasn’t happening.
This summer has been absolutely joyous, with each gig building on the previous one, and we were all buzzing with excitement about Curveball. Please accept our deepest apologies for the disruption that this has caused all of you.. We wish there was something else we could say.
Thank you all from the depths of our souls for the joy that you continue to share with us every night. This has been the greatest summer we can remember.
Travel safe and know that we are as heartbroken as all of you. We are standing back here behind the stage, at our party that we’ve been planning for over a year, and we have just told that it won’t happen. There’s just nothing we can do.

The New York State Department Of Health & Schuyler County released the following statement-
With a 14 county State of Emergency still in effect, the prospect of additional inclement weather, and a mandatory boil water order for the Village of Watkins Glen issued today, Schuyler County and the New York State Department of Health are unable to issue the required permits for this weekend’s Curveball Festival.
This week’s severe storm created untenable conditions, including the inability to deliver clean drinking water to patrons and vendors as confirmed by test results delivered today.
Working collaboratively with Watkins Glen International and Phish, the County and the State explored all options to allow the event to continue as scheduled.
While all parties acknowledge the inconvenience of this cancellation to patrons, we have a responsibility to act in the best interest of public health and safety for all.
Phish and Curveball Festival organizers will be notifying ticketholders about how to obtain a refund.
Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup said, “Public health and safety is a concern for all events at Watkins Glen International. While we are disappointed Curveball has been cancelled, we understand and support the county and Department of Health’s decision.”
Senator Tom O’Mara said, “I appreciate the hard work and perseverance of state and local health officials, concert promoters, and everyone at The Glen to try to find a way to give the go-ahead for Phish this weekend. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate and threw a curveball of her own over the past several days. It’s disappointing for the band, the fans, and the community at large — and I was looking forward to attending myself — but it’s really the only decision that could be made for the overall sake of the public’s health and safety.”
Assemblyman Philip Palmesano said, “I share the disappointment of fans, Watkins Glen International, and the local community. But we appreciate the diligent efforts of state and local health officials, concert promoters, and Glen officials to try to find any way possible to give a green light to this weekend’s festival. Unfortunately, the cancellation is the only decision that can be made to appropriately and responsibly protect the public’s health and safety.”
Arrangements for refunds has not yet been announced .
Music News- Critically acclaimed and platinum-selling artist ERIC HUTCHINSON partnered yesterday (8/15) to debut his new single “she could be the one.” The upliftingly melodic and rhythmically driving song, available everywhere tomorrow, is from his upcoming MODERN HAPPINESS album that’s out October 5.

“It always had an old-fashioned-y Beatles vibe or something, and it seemed like it made sense with a live band,” ERIC tells Billboard‘s Gary Graff about “she could be the one.” “It really came alive in the studio. We found a groove. The drums got big. And I’m a huge Elvis Costello fan, so we found a nice, Elvisy kind of vibe with the guitar and the (Farfisa) organ that just felt powerful. And it fit within the construct of, ‘What is modern happiness?’ (The song) includes monogamy and being faithful and being true to yourself and all that stuff, so it seemed like the time was right for it.”
On MODERN HAPPINESS, his fifth full-length studio album, ERIC dives into the human condition and the need of many who rely on anti-depressants to find their “modern happiness.” ERIC says, “This album is the first music I’ve written since I started taking Prozac and the lyrics are very much about my eternal search for purpose, contentment and meaning.”
HUTCHINSION–a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer–is known for his unforgettable presence, high-energy singalongs, and live musicality. To introduce the record, which encompasses rock, pop and rootsy stylings in a collection of songs that are deeply personal, he opted for an unconventional and forward-thinking rollout. Over the course of 2018, he’ll drop one track per month at DSPs through October 5 when the final song arrives and his tour is underway.
Music News- Brooklyn's Future Generations, creators of on-point pop tunes DIY style, will release their new album, Landscape via Frenchkiss Records on September 14 . The album was produced by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, Hamilton Leithauser). They have shared the single "All The Same" and have also released the title track and more recently, "Suddenly" .

Landscape
The second full-length from Future Generations, Landscape emerged from the kind of playful creativity only possible among the closest collaborators. Five friends who all live together in Brooklyn, Future Generations brought Landscape to life by balancing their pop-minded songcraft with bursts of free-form experimentation: recording guitar riffs from the receiving end of a phone call, messing with a vintage synthesizer called the Fun Machine, building percussion tracks by sampling a batch of drum-circle recordings. So while the album’s abundance of hooky melodies makes each song immediately catchy, Landscape unfolds with an intricacy of detail that reveals more nuance and depth with every new listen.
The follow-up to their 2016 self-titled LP, Landscape finds Future Generations matching that sonic exploration with a greater emotional intensity. “The title partly came from ending the first significant relationship of my life, and with the band’s move to Brooklyn, we were all put into this world we’d never experienced—living on our own and navigating the landscape of being in New York City,” the band’s singer Eddie Gore explains.
Produced by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, Hamilton Leithauser), Landscape is also the first Future Generations release to feature their full lineup which aside from Gore includes Mike Sansevere (synthesizer, guitar, percussion), Eric Grossman (guitar), Devon Sheridan (bass), and Dylan Wells (percussion) as the latter two joined the band a few years after its’ formation. Throughout the album, the band proves the power of their chemistry in songs like lead single “All the Same,” a track that builds a brilliant tension between its nostalgia-soaked synth lines and lyrics that perfectly channel pre-breakup disillusionment. A bravely honest look at longing for connection—and rejecting the emptiness of one-night stands—“Suddenly” draws inspiration from hip-hop in its sampled beats, an element offset by the song’s shimmering synth and acoustic guitar. That hip-hop influence also informs the hypnotic rhythms of “Out Loud,” while “Landscape” mines its frenzied urgency from the unchecked fury of punk. And on “I Never Knew I Was Lonely,” Future Generations deliver one of the album’s most chilling moments, shifting between stripped-bare vocals and brutal guitar work to beautifully unsettling effect.

Start All Over Again is a study of the mythology of freedom. It is a modern country-rock record by Matt Berry, under his pseudonym The Berries. It is made up of songs of love and hate, songs under the spell of Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt, and songs carved out of the disappointment of a morose Seattle winter.
If you know the California underground music scene, Berry likely needs little introduction. He has already created a name for himself as the prolific mind behind such treasures as the lushly blown out Happy Diving (Father/Daughter Records) and the tautly psychedelic, Wipers-esque Big Bite (Pop Wig). On Start All Over Again, however, Berry replaces the relentless pace and anxious stylings of his shapeshifting past with a new frame of mind, one derived from excessive reclusion and aimed at indulgent self-awareness, expansion, and a deep fascination with Americana. Besides a single guitar track contributed on the song "Turn It Away" by Charlie Hoffman (of Help Yourself Records label-mates Advertisement), Berry performed and recorded the entirety of Start All Over Again by himself, laboring away over a series of sessions that consumed most of the second half of 2017.
