A2IM, the American Association of Independent Music, will be part of Independents Day, an international celebration of independent music, this Fourth of July weekend, 2008. They will be releasing an exclusive compilation album featuring some of the country’s most well-known and respected independent artists, conducting an online auction with some rare music memorabilia, and more. Proceeds raised by the event will be divided between A2IM, WIN
(the Worldwide Independent Network), the Recording Academy’s charity MusiCares, and a special fund that supports those working to create their own independent label groups in regions like the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. A2IM is a non-profit organization of independent music labels dedicated to protecting and advancing the place of independent labels in the national music marketplace. The auction, begins July 4th and will last for 10 days and features a treasure of rare memorabilia, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and signed merchandise, all supplied by A2IM and its sister organizations across seven participating countries.
• Activities for sale include a four-hour rare-record quest around New York City with DJ Spooky, a trumpet lesson from hip hop/Latin/Jazz ensemble Ozomati, and a chance to be an MTV VJ for a day.
• Signed items up for auction include a CD from Thom Yorke, posters from the New Pornographers and Cat Power and an autographed skateboard designed and signed by Quasimoto, a designed and autographed Congo drum by Burning Spear
• and test pressings belonging to Kim Deal (Pixies/Breeders) and Zach Condon (Beirut).
• Other items up for auction include an ultra-rare Interpol 7” box set, a Platinum Sales Certification Plaque for Nickelback’s ‘Silver Side Up,’ and lithograph of artwork from Evanescence’s double-platinum album ‘The Open Door.’
A2IM has also put together a digital-only compilation album that showcases America’s diverse and vital independent music scene. The album, curated by A2IM members, features previously unreleased tracks from Frank Black, Busy Signal, Elizabeth Cook, Ani DiFranco, Living Legends, and a rare Slipknot track. and more. It will be available for a very limited 72-hour window (July 4-6) at Amazon, eMusic, and select retail partners. Independents Day is the first-ever global celebration of independent music, taking place over the 4th of July holiday weekend.
