Legedary singer/songwriter Isaac Hayes passed away today in Memphis, TN at age 65. He was a groundbreaking performer and helped make Stax-Volt Records a major record company in the '60s and '70s. His sexy, baritone voice earned him the nickname, "The Black Moses". His style of soul and r & b made him a household name around the globe for the last several decades. Mr Hayes was reportedly found by his wife, unconscious in his Memphis home after noon on Sunday, 8/10. She immediately called for medical assistance. He had been in declining health for some time, but still continued to be an active presence not only musically but in many civic activities. Along with hia co-composer David Porter, Hayes was the creative force behind so many of Stax-Volt's early hits. Mr Hayes became a very successful singer on his own with such popular albums as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He also scored several films, including Shaft, for which he won an Academy Award for the "Theme from Shaft" (the first for a black composer). He was also known to a much different audience from the tv show, South Park, as the voice of Chef. The character was a large, sexed-up, black cafeteria chef at South Park Elementary School.
