If you can't make it out to Newport, RI, USA this weekend for the Newport Folk Festival, you can hear parts of the event on live radio or the Internet. National Public Radio will broadcast the sets of some of the top acts on radio stations in New York/New Jersey, USA markets. NPR will also put the performances on the Internet for live streaming, on-demand listening and, in some cases, "podcasting." Artists from the folk festival whose shows will be on the web include; Jim James, She & Him, Richie Havens, Gillian Welch, Steve Earle and Allison Moorer, Jakob Dylan, Cowboy Junkies and Brandi Carlile.
Since 1959, the Newport Folk Festival has been an American institution. It was founded by folksingers and managers Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, Pete Seeger, George Wein, and Albert Grossman. Some of the most important folk musicians in history have come through Newport, including Johnny Cash, Howlin' Wolf, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan, whose controversial plugged-in "electric" performance at the Newport Folk Festival is still debated. Log onto www.NPR.org/music
or WFUV.org (see our link in sidebar) to listen in. This is the first time NPR Music is webcasting the Newport festival. The festival runs today through Sunday. Listen in and enjoy !!!
