The day is upon us, tonight is the final concert in the career of THE POLICE. Sting, Andy Summers and
Stewart Copeland have previously announced and have billed tonite's NYC charity show for public television (WNET, 13 in NYC and WLIW, 21 in Long Island, NY), at the world famous Madison Square Garden as the last concert they will perform together. They are legendary in the studio as they are live in concert. From the ashes of the punk movement, these British rockers became a world phenomenon as a result of their great, innovative music and constant touring, thanks in large part to manager, Miles Copeland and agent Ian Copeland). With a library of MUST OWN albums (Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machines, Regatta De Blanc and others) behind them,
they've had their ups and downs eventually disbanding due to musical and personal differences but re-united in 2007 for a final world tour. Produced by Live Nation Global Touring and RZO Entertainment the much-acclaimed tour played to over 2.5 million people on five continents and has gotten many accolades such as 'Major Tour of the Year' (Pollstar), 'Top Selling' and 'Top Tour of the Year' (Billboard Magazine) as well as the People's Choice award for 'Favorite Reunion Tour of 2007.' Rolling Stone Mag also included the group on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
If you can, get to NYC for tonite's gig (the B-52s will open), a limited number of tix are still available. If you can't make it, don't fret, a dvd release is likely. Also, if you can 't go tonight, click here at 10:45pm USA ET on 8/7 for a live simulcast of their final, three encore songs (but buy The Police cds from MNN, HERE). What's your guess as to what the final songs will be? And, like The Eagles, maybe The Police will too return someday!!! Let's hope they stay together long enough to try one final studio album of new material.
The POLICE will also be taping an appearance on the new Elvis Costello "talk" show (Sundance Channel) this afternoon while in NYC. Watch here for more details on the airing.
