MUSIC NEWS- The prestigious Mercury Music Prize winner for 2008 has been announced today. And the Manchester, UK group, ELBOW took at this year's Mercury honors (and approximately $40,000) for their critically acclaimed fourth release, THE SELDOM SEEN KID. This five-piece from northern England beat out favorites like Radiohead, Burial and Robert Plant/Alison Kraus and have joined the ranks of prior champs like Pulp, Primal Scream, Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, and the Arctic Monkeys. The award, for the band's fourth studio album The Seldom Seen Kid, comes 18 years after they formed and seven years after their first nomination. The band formed back in 1990 but it took them nearly ten years to release their debut album Asleep in the Back. According to press reports, singer Guy Garvey declared this victory "the best thing that's ever happened to us," and admitted he'd bet "a tenner on Radiohead" to win. "It just feels great, very unexpected. You look at it in the same way as Bedouin tribes look at a pint of milk. It doesn't happen very often, but it's all the sweeter. "It's been a long time we've been doing it, so it's cause for celebration. To the rest of the lads, I'm so proud to do it with it with my best mates," Guy added.
