MUSIC NEWS - PETER GABRIEL is to be honored for his charitable work at an Amnesty International event in London on Wednesday, September 10 at the Hard Rock Cafe. Gabriel, once the lead singer for the British rock group, Genesis, and long since an inventive socially conscious solo performer, will be given the charity’s Ambassador of Conscience Award by U2 rocker The Edge. The award recognizes Gabriel’s work for the human rights charity. He worked with Amnesty on the 1986 Conspiracy of Hope Tour, a series of benefit concerts held across the U.S.A. He also founded his own human rights charity, Witness. Gabriel, 58, will join an impressive roster with this honor; previous recipients include Nelson Mandela and Irish rockers, U2. He recently released the cd, BIG BLUE BALL. The event will also mark the official launch of Amnesty International's Global Small Places Tour 2008. This tour is AI's most ambitious global music and human rights project since their Human Rights Now! Tour back in 1988. Complete details of the tour and the participating artists will be announced after the award presentation to Gabriel.
