MUSIC NEWS - Cabaret-pop act Antony and the Johnsons have revealed album and tour info, including the cover art (at right) for the new release, "The Crying Light", their third studio album. Following a natural progression from the Another World EP, the album art features a 1977 portrait of renowned Butoh dancer, Kazuo Ohno, taken by Naoya Ikegami in Tokyo. Ohno is shown reaching towards light, his striking visage and reclined posture echoing elements of cradle and the grave. Life, death, and transcendence are effectively invoked in one image. Of the new release Antony says, "My new album "The Crying Light" is dedicated to the great dancer Kazuo Ohno. In performance I watched him cast a circle of light upon the stage, and step into that circle, and reveal the dreams and reveries of his heart". The band, mainly a vehicle for lead singer Antony Hegarty, will then tour in 2009, visiting fourteen North American cities in February, kicking off February 2 in Glenside, PA, then heading overseas for a run of dates across Europe and the UK (Euro dates still tbd). American dates are included below. "The Crying Light" is due to be released on Secret Canadian Records, January 20. The album (and the "Another World" EP that surfaced in October) follow the 2005 critically acclaimed "I Am a Bird Now," which earned Hegarty the much regarded UK Mercury Music Prize . Hegarty also collaborated on some tracks last year with Bjork, including her recent single "Dull Flame of Desire," which arrived in September.
