MUSIC NEWS - Celebrate the music of R.E.M. on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Carnegie Hall in NYC. A wide range of artists will be performing the songs of the legendary alternative rock group from Athens, Georgia. Michale Stipe and R.E.M. led the underground American music movement with a constant stream of hit records from the early eighties through today.
So far, the lineup includes: Throwing Muses with Kristin Hersh, Kimya Dawson, Ingrid Michaelson, Darius Rucker of Hootie & The Blowfish, Glenn Hansard of Swell Season & The Frames , The Apples In Stereo, Marshall Crenshaw, Tommy James and The Shondells, Jolie Holland, Patti Smith, The Feelies, Keren Ann, Guster, Fink, The dB's, Bob Mould of Husker Du & Sugar, Rhett Miller of The Old 97's, Vic Chesnutt & Elf Power, Rachael Yamagata, Special House Band for the Evening: Calexico

VIP tickets, which include entrance to a private artist reception after the show at City Winery featuring cuisine designed by Food Network chef Mario Batali, are also available. Proceeds will benefit The American Symphony Orchestra, Church Street School for Music & Art and The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, all of which provide musical education programs for underprivileged youth.

UPDATE 3/12/09 - R.E.M. themselves made a surprise appearance last night (March 11) at Carnegie Hall. Apparently, Stipe and other bandmembers were humbled by the sincerity and performances of the evening, then proceeded to play “E-Bow The Letter” off thei 1996 "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" album. Patti Smith accompanied Stipe on vocals, while Peter Buck and Mike Mills played in the background. The final set list & performer for the 3/11/09 R.E.M. NYC Tribute concert-
