VIRGIN MEGASTORE in Times Square Announces Closing Sale

     MUSIC NEWS - If you plan to be in the NYC area soon, make sure you visit Times Square, as Virgin Megastores announced that it's running the "biggest sale in music retail history" to mark the closing of the Times Square location. They say the staff at the Times Square Virgin Megastore has been working around the clock to prepare for this major event, which will begin February 19, 2009.

"This sale will give our loyal shoppers one last chance to browse the world's largest music store," said Simon Wright, CEO, Virgin Entertainment Group. "We'll be offering discount prices on items that might be difficult to find in the days to come, and we hope our customers have a lot of fun shopping this final sale."

The Times Square Virgin Megastore opened its doors back in April 1996 and has since become an American icon, providing the backdrop for numerous movies and commercials filmed in the tourist hot spot in New York's Times Square as well as hosting numerous musician / band appearances.  The store is set to close in April 2009 due to rising rents in midtown Manhattan and the decline in the dvd and cd retail business.

UPDATE 2/26/09 - Two more Virgin stores to shut!  Virgin announced the closing of their Union Squre stores in both New York and San Francisco by April (SF) and May (NYC).  The music and video industry's awaits word on the fate of Virgin's three remaining "mega"stores.
