MUSIC NEWS - Celebrity dj, DJ AM was found dead in his NYC SoHo apartment on Friday, of an apparent overdose, police said. Emergency medical workers responding to a 911 call from a friend of his and declared DJ AM dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected.
The Philadelphia, PA native, Goldstein, used hisTwitter account a few days ago, tweeting that he had just wrapped filming of the MTV reality show series, Gone Too Far, in Connecticut and was on his way to Atlantic City, NJ, to DJ. He also posted a lyric from the hip-hop legends GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five: "New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems."
MTV has eight episodes of "Gone Too Far" completed, no word yet on whether the show will air. MTV issues statement:
"There's no reason why I should have lived or why I lived and they didn't," DJ AM said at press tour event about the September 2008 South Carolina plane crash Travis Barker (Blink 182) survived. "But I am alive and I'm here and I have to do something better with my life now ... I struggled for years as a drug addict and was fortunate to get help when I asked for it. I have managed to live a clean and sober life, something that takes work and something that I pride myself on. ‘Gone Too Far’ is my platform to help people, like I was helped – by giving back in a way."
No word on funeral arrangements, or memorial services.
UPDATE - NYC authorities will conduct toxicology tests, expected to take weeks, to determine what killed DJ AM, a medical examiner's office spokeswoman said today, Saturday. The initial autopsy, Saturday, of the 36-year-old was inconclusive, said the spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove.
UPDATE 9/29/09 - The NYC medical examiner's office ruled today that DJ AM died accidentally from a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs and cocaine. The toxicology report showed he a mixture of drugs in his system cocaine, OxyContin, Hydrocodone or Vicodin, antianxiety drugs Xanax and Ativan, Klonopin which also controls anger, Benadryl, and Levamisole, a drug apparently used to cut cocaine.
The Offical cause of death was acute intoxication due to the combined effects the drugs, the medical examiner's office said.
