Paul McCartney To Release NYC Citi Field Shows on CD / DVD

MUSIC NEWS - News out that Paul McCartney's historic three-night musical grand opening of New York City's Citi Field, (the Shea Stadium replacment)  with 120,000 + in attendance will be be released on cd/dvd as Good Evening New York City,  via Hear Music/Concord Music Group on November 17 (order below). Out in two formats: a 3-disc (2 CD + 1 DVD) standard edition and a 4-disc (2 CD + 2 DVD) deluxe

NEKO CASE Can't Get Enough of the Road, New Shows Added

      MUSIC NEWS -  Neko Case extends her tour and announces more Autumn 2009 dates and events!  After recently taping a performance in NYC for the next season of Spectacle: Elvis Costello With... (on Sundance Channel) and a duet with Meatwad from the popular Cartoon Network show Aqua Teen Hunger Force, she's next to take part in A Prairie Home Companion on October 10, and then back to NYC for a discussion with the New Yorker's pop music critic Sasha Frere-Jones as part of The New Yorker Festival on October 17.

On November 16, Neko plays her biggest headlining NYC show so far; at the Beacon Theater (see below for complete itinerary) and accross the Hudson River the day before in NJ at the Wellmont Theatre, followed in December by a stint in the Guest Programmer's chair on the Turner Classic Movies channel.

Case's amazing album 'MIddle Cyclone' (Anti-) remains the highest debuting independent release of 2009.

TOP Five Cancelled / Interrupted Concerts

     If you ever had to deal with the disappoinment of a cancelled or postponed concert, and with the continued health issues of many artists cancellations become more frequent (see recent  Aerosmith, AC/DC and Depeche Mode news for examples), you'll appreciate this list of top stories behind interrupted/cancelled concets that was compiled by Europe’s leading secondary ticketing company, viagogo.  The Doors topped the poll with their interrupted gig at the New Haven Arena in 1967; Jim Morrison was arrested on stage by local police for breaking the state’s obscenity laws and inciting the crowd to riot.

A 2007 Bloc Party gig in Utrecht, Holland came a very close second in the poll: the band was forced to stop playing when the crowd spotted a couple having sex in the audience.  Distracted from the gig, other audience members were inspired to get it on themselves and couples throughout the auditorium started having sex, prompting the band to slink off stage.

From the UK, RIVAL CONSOLES New Electronic "IO"

     MUSIC NEWS - One of the top makers of intelligent electronic dance music, Leicaster, UK's, Rival Consoles (23-year old Ryan Lee West) has just released IO on Erased Tapes. Rival Consoles first appeared two years ago with an EP released on the London-based label. After having supported his city neighbors and label buddies on an extensive European tour in November 2008, West determinedly worked all winter to finish his first full-length album 'IO', out in North America now.  With unusual influences from impressionists such as Claude Debussy and modern electronic artists such as Autechre and Daft Punk, Ryan Lee West has created a unique signature sound for Rival Consoles.

SHAFT Soundtrack Set for Deluxe Remastered Release

     MUSIC NEWS-  Stax Records announced a November 3, 2009 release of Shaft (Deluxe Edition), a digitally remastered version of the soundtrack for the classic Blaxploitation film that will includd a bonus track: "Theme From Shaft [2009 Mix]."  Ashley Kahn, author of several music books, contributor to NPR's "Morning Edition" and adjunct professor at New York University, wrote the liner notes for the deluxe edition.

Back in 1971, the tune was everywhere. "Who is the man who would risk his neck for his brother man?" Shaft? Damn right. Isaac Hayes' Shaft soundtrack album became a #1 album on both the pop and R&B charts -- and remained on the charts for a jaw-dropping 60 weeks.  It was the first soul soundtrack to a major motion picture and would earn Hayes a Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe and put him on the track to stardom.

The soundtrack continues to influence popular music -- hip-hop in particular.  A primary reason for the continued significance of the ultimate Blaxploitation film Shaft is Hayes' score. He created music that sounded like nothing else of its day. "The one thing I've learned from Shaft," Hayes told The New York Times in 1972, "is that pop music doesn't set any restrictions anymore. You don't just have to go up there and sing a song because that's the way it was always done before. Use whatever means necessary, be it rap, song or arrangement, to get to the people."

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Announces NJ "Album Nights" for Giants Stadium

      MUSIC NEWS - The Boss has announced that he and the E Street band will play full versions of three of their classic albums during the series of shows that begin this week and that will mark the final concerts (ever) at New Jersey's Giant Stadium.

They'll perform their 1975 classic "Born to Run" on two nights of the five-night run, tomorrow night's (9/30) performance and the October 8 show; on October 3 and October 9 (closing night) you'll hear 1984's "Born in the USA", with 1978's "Darkness on the Edge of Town" at the October 2 gig.  In addition to the album sets, the shows will also include a mix of songs from Springsteen's career.

The five NJ shows start up the final 2009 leg (itinerary below) of Springsteen's tour supporting his "Working on a Dream" studio album.  The run started back in May and will likely be the last chance to see Bruce and band for quite some time, at least according to guitarist Steven Van Zandt recently gave to reporters on a conference call who said the band will be taking a break.

DEAD BY SUNRISE; Alive With New Album and NYC, Vegas & L.A. Shows!

        MUSIC NEWS - Dead by Sunrise, the new group led by Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, have announced three live shows celebrating the release of their debut album, Out of Ashes, out October 13 via Warner Bros. Records.

DbS, Bennington on vocals, guitarists Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh (from Orgy/Julien-K), bassist Brandon Belsky, drummer Elias Anda (also from Julien-K), and keyboardist Anthony Valcic, will play Wasted Space in the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas on October 1,  The Gramercy Theatre in NYC on October 14, and at the Roxy in Los Angeles on October 19.

 

Get you tickets now, because the band will treat you to songs from Out of Ashes, which was produced by Howard Benson (Motorhead, My Chemical Romance). The album’s first single, “Crawl Back In,”is getting rock radio airplay (call your station NOW if they're not on it !). The video for “Crawl Back In” is belwo.

 

And, Dead by Sunrise will perform at MTV’s first annual “Ulalume” Halloween festival on October 23, 2009, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD; along with alongside Paramore, AFI, and Kid Cudi. Their performance will air during a Halloween-themed week on MTV, MTV.com, mtvU, and mtvU.com.

     MUSIC NEWS - From Fluxus and performance-art pioneer and Two Virgins to chart-topping dance-music heroine (inspiring punk rock along the way!), Yoko Ono has been an

innovative and influential force on music and art, while simultaneously campaigning for peace on the world's stage.  At 76 years, Yoko continues to kick butt -- and has now released her new,  BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY, (buy below) a career-defining album made with her new Plastic Ono Band. The record is a mind-melting blend of styles, restating and sharpening themes while plunging into the always-mysterious future.  

The sessions took place at NYC’s Sear Sound, the same studio that used to house the old Hit Factory, where the Double Fantasy album was recorded. Sean Lennon both produced the new effort, with Yoko and acted as musical leader for a group divided between Japanese avant pop musicians, and downtown Manhattan improvisers. In the Japanese contingent is Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto, plus the current group led by Keigo “Cornelius” Oyamada, which includes Yuko Araki and Hirotaka Shimmy Shimizu. Cornelius and Ms. Ono performed together in Tokyo in January, and Yoko was so happy with the result she invited them over to record. In the Manhattan improv camp we find Shahzad Ismaily (guitar, bass, percussion), Erik Friedlander(cello), Michael Leonhart (trumpet, vibes), Daniel Carter (reeds) and Indigo Street (guitar) -- a singularly gifted group of instrumentalists.

RICK WAKEMAN's "Six Wives of Henry VIII" Gets DVD, Blu Ray Release

     MUSIC NEWS -  Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced the release of a live version of legendary rock keyboardist and ex-Yes man, RICK WAKEMAN's  The Six Wives Of Henry VIII on DVD and Blu-ray and  CD (October 13).   From his classic solo work, this eagerly anticipated release  is his first solo release on blu-ray disc.  

Rick Wakeman’s The Six Wives Of Henry VIII is one of the landmark prog rock albums of

the seventies, a critical and commercial success that has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.  Back in May 2009, Wakeman finally achieved his long held dream of performing the entire album live at Hampton Court Palace. It was the first time the whole album had ever been performed in concert and included the Henry VIII track “Defender Of The Faith,” that had to be cut from the original album for space reasons, plus new opening and closing pieces. The two spectacular sell out concerts were a never to be repeated event, which give those not able to attend the ability to experience this epic performance.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Releasing Multi Disc LIVE ANTHOLOGY Set and SUPERHIGHWAY Tour

     MUSIC NEWS  -  TOM PETTY and The Heartbreakers have announced the ambitious release of The Live Anthology, (out via Reprise Records) a multi-disc set of recordings culled from 30 years of live performances,  and their digital SUPERHIGHWAY TOUR !   The cd collection brings together material from 1978-2007 from hundreds of hours of live concert recordings covering every era of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ tours and gives us the best tracks as chosen by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate.

 

The online, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers SuperHighway Tour is a first of its kind (that we know of), online-only music experience that serves up 24 of the 48 Live Anthology tracks as high-quality digital downloads and on-demand streams over 8 weeks before the Live Anthology’s release. ELP Bassist, GREG LAKE, Guest on New TRAN-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA Work

MUSIC NEWS - TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA has announced the upcoming release of its hugely anticipated new album, “NIGHT CASTLE” out on Atlantic Records on October 27.    “Night Castle” is without TSO’s most ambitious and adventurous album to date.  Founder Paul O'Neill and his crew have crafted 26 songs that cover hard rock to classical genres, taking you on a journey through different points of history. The two-CD set will be released at a special low price, and will include a unique 68-page booklet, featuring story, lyrics, and full-color illustrations by legendary artist Greg Hildebrandt.

“Obviously our fans have been unbelievably patient,” O’Neill says.  “This was supposed to come out a few years ago.  But we were dedicated to making something really special, and the longer it took, the more pressure we felt to give people the best possible piece of art we could.

JOHN MAYER Unveils New Tune, WHO SAYS

     MUSIC NEWS- John Mayer debuted the first single, Who Says from his new album Battle Studies (order the full album below) on his website, after informing fans via his Twitter account saying, "From my heart to yours."  A switch from this electric blues of The John Mayer Trio (bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan), this song's an acoustic ballad more similar to recent Mayer cuts like Say

and Stop This Train.

Battle Studies, which Mr Mayer calls "a record where you could sing any of the songs in an American Idol audition" is releasin November 17 (via Sony Music).  Not sure what to make of that comment!   In his WHO SAYS Tweet, Mayer also suggested that the song sounds best between "8pm-3am on Friday and Saturday nights," choose your listening sessions wisely then.

AC/DC Postpones Six USA Gigs

MUSIC NEWS - AC/DC has announced it will postponed six of the band's USA tour dates due to the ill health of front man Brian Johnson.   Confirmed postponement are -  Des Moines, Iowa, Kansas City, Mo., Las Vegas, Lousiville, Milwaukee and Phoenix as Johnson has been advised by doctors to rest as the singer recently underwent an unspecified medial procedure.

AC/DC started the current North American leg of it's Black Ice World Tour in July with a show in Boston, MA. The tour will now pick up again on October 16 in Washington, DC. New dates for the postponed shows were not yet revealed.

BOWIE's " A Reality Tour" CD Gets Remaster Treatment

       

MUSIC NEWS - David Bowie's A REALITY TOUR live CD release has finally been remastered and will be released as a double-CD.  Bowie's October 2003 thru June 2004 Reality World Tour was the highest-grossing global tour of 2004 and one of the most critically acclaimed tours of Bowie’s career.  It was hailed as “Best Tour: #2” in the “Critics’ Picks” section of Rolling Stone’s “Music Awards 2003” poll (after Radiohead).  To make the new CD version more compelling (A Reality Tour dvd was also released) the configuration includes three bonus tracks performed on the tour but not included on the original DVD: “China Girl,” “Breaking Glass” and “Fall Dog Bombs The Moon.”  The 33-song set, recorded in Dublin,  will be at all stores and digital shoppes on January 26, 2010 (via ISO RECORDS and COLUMBIA/LEGACY.
