FLOGGING MOLLY Sets New Years Eve Plans (L.A. Wins!) and Announces '10 Tour

MUSIC NEWS- FLOGGING MOLLY has just added three shows at the end of this year to help ring in 2010! They've announced plans to play the historic Wiltern Theatre in their hometown of Los Angeles, CA on New Year's Eve. The band will take their show to the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA on New Year's Day and the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV on January 2, 2010. Tickets go on sale for all three shows this Friday, December 4th through LiveNation.com.

Atlantic Records Raids the Vaults for "Atlantic Records: Time Capsule" Box Set Release

Music News- One of the more important boxed sets of the Holiday seaons, Atlantic Records recently (11/17) released their “ATLANTIC RECORDS: TIME CAPSULE,” an amazing boxed set ($199.98 slp) that celebrates the label’s past and present through music, images, and words.  The most comprehensive project ever devoted to the Atlantic story, this numbered, limited edition cd/dvd collection spans the label’s entire history, from its inception in 1947 to the present day (see artist list below).

Sony Unveils Michael Jackson "This Is It" 2010 DVD Release Plans

MUSIC NEWS -  After failing to release Michael Jackson’s This Is It on home entertainment this holiday season (see MNN story) , Sony has announced the This Is It DVD and Blu-ray release for January 26, 2010, planning to tie in the set to the Grammy Awards.

Sony has said DVD and Blu-ray will contain extra materials not seen in theatres, where the release topped off at only $72M in the USA after its' much anticipated October 28 release and the music video for MJ's Thriller tune. The basic DVD will have over an hour of extra footage, and the Blu-ray release will contain an extra 1.5 hours of material.  Exclusive to their Blu-ray set is a “Smooth Criminal” vignette that was originally planned to screen before the Jackson This Is It London concerts. Also planned are exclusive "collectible" gift with purchase at specific retailers (details tbd).

FACE 2 FACE Tour Gets Updated by Elton John & Billy Joel for 2010

MUSIC NEWS- After a number of medical problems that caused concert cancellations on their Face 2 Face tour, Elton John and Billy Joel have revised their tour itinerary and announced they'll resume in February 2010 (full, updated itinerary below).

The updated itinerary follows the original schedule and opens in Seattle, WA, now on February 3 & 6 at the KeyArena, with the new tour wrap up on March 11 at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.  The new dates eliminate a replacement for the cancelled November 28 concert at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, AR.  Tour mgmt announced that due to a scheduling conflict, the two were prevented to book a new performance in the Little Rock area.

Tickets from the original performances will be honored at the rescheduled concerts.

THE WHO Confirmed for Superbowl XLIV Halftime Performance

MUSIC NEWS - The NFL confirmed today during Thursday's game between the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys that The Who will headline the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show on CBS Sports at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida on Sunday, February 7, 2010. The Bridgestone Super Bowl halftime show is one of the most anticipated musical events of the year with more than 151 million viewers in the USA watched last year's show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide in more than 230 countries and territories.

The Who join an esteemed list of recent halftime acts that includes Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney.  Driven by singer Roger Daltrey (currently wrapping up his solo USA tour) and guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend, the band's two remaining original members, The Who gained fame in the mid-1960s and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. 

Many of the classic songs the band will perform are a few of those included on their upcoming Greatest Hits collection, releasing December 22, 2009 via Geffen/UMe. The release will be the largest single-disc "best of" collection from The Who in more than ten years and is the first to span the group's entire recording career to date, from 1964 to 2006. The 19-tune Greatest Hits (order below) brings together some of rock's most important, influential and incandescent touchstones, along with an essay by renowned music critic Dave Marsh.

THANKSGIVING TV Special From Paul McCartney

MUSIC NEWS - Good Evening New York City, Paul McCartney's multi-disc CD/DVD documenting his historic three-night musical christening of New York's Citi Field has been hailed as a concert experience for the ages, (released by Hear Music/Concord Music Group) holds special significance for McCartney and generations of his fans.  Citi Field is the site of the former Shea Stadium, the same spot that The Beatles, in 1965, played the 34-minute show that would set the precedent for the modern day stadium rock show--and where in 2008 McCartney joined Billy Joel for the final rock show before the original stadium's demolition.

RONNIE JAMES DIO Diagnosed with Stomach Cancer

MUSIC NEWS - Last week, Wendy Dio, wife and manager of heavy metal legendary lead singer Ronnie James Dio's (Elf, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio) announced that her husband’s UK tour was canceled and that he had been hospitalized with early stage stomach cancer.

“Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.

“Thanks to all the friends and fans around the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up.

CREED Announces LIVE Dvd Release

MUSIC NEWS - The fans of multi-platinum power rockers CREED are in for a special holiday treat this Christmas as CREED LIVE, the first-ever live DVD from one of the most successful bands of the past decade, arrive in stores and thru all major online retailers on Tuesday December 8 (UK release date is Monday December 7), one day after a theatrical screening.

LIVE NATION Offers Up Programs Thru iTunes

MUSIC NEWS -  Live Nation, thru its Studios divison, this week launched a new live music program via the iTunes Music Store. The concert giant will offer exclusive recorded and filmed concerts from its network of "wired" venues for purchase and download. Live recordings from OK Go, Jesse McCartney, Saving Abel, A Fine Frenzy, Duffy, Plain White T's and Ziggy Marley, among others, have been released this week, with more to come. iTunes has added a new area to the store dedicated to the live recordings, and concert videos cost between $8 and $13, while audio shows typically cost $8.

MUSIC NEWS - It's holiday caroling time again!  Julian Koster and his Singing Saw will come to your house to bring songs, stories, and good cheer to you and your friends; all you have to do is invite them!

To promote the spirit of the holidays and The Singing Saw at Christmastime, Julian, his dog Rudolph and his Singing Saw friend Badger set out on a caroling tour last fall. 25 Songs Added to Grammy Hall of Fame

MUSIC NEWS - The Recording Academy has announced their newest additions to its GRAMMY Hall Of Fame, adding 25 recordings to a list that now includes 851 titles. The selections are drawn from all genres of music and acknowledge the diversity of musical expression. The list and recordings now reside as a collection on display at the GRAMMY Museum in L.A.

The selected recordings range from 1923's "Dipper Mouth Blues" by King Oliver & His Jazz Band to 1977's "Birdland" by Weather Report is the most recent of the inductees, which have to be at least 25 years old. Other recordings chosen this year include Louis Armstrong's "Lazy River," the Beach Boys' "California Girls," James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World," George's Carlin's Class Clown, the Doors' "Riders On The Storm," Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad," and Bob Marley & The Wailers' Catch A Fire. Other artists with selections include the Isley Brothers, Bo Diddley, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Mahalia Jackson, Harry James & His Orchestra, Janis Joplin, Johnny Mercer, Jelly Roll Morton, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Mr Bojangles) .

B&N, Borders and Warner Music Report Declines

MUSIC NEWS - Related stories ?  Retailers Barnes & Noble and Borders along with record company, WMG reported declines.  B&N store sales decreased 2% to $950 million for the recent quarter, with comp store sales decreasing 3.2%. The largest USA bookstore chain which also sells cds, dvds and blu ray discs reduced its full-year financial forecast due to continued consumer uncertainty.   Borders Group Inc, the Ann Arbor, MI  based book and music retailer announced a net loss for their 3rd quarter due to declining sales as customers moved to online retailers. 

"SPECTACLE: Elvis Costello with..." Returns for Season Two

MUSIC NEWS - The second season of Sundance Channel's popular music/talk original series “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” will return on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 10:00pm et/pt with an episode featuring U2’s Bono and The Edge (maybe some Spiderman, The Musical discussion?). “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” combines the best parts of talk and music television and lets viewers in on intimate conversation and performances with host Costello and his guests, who range from legendary performers to up and comers. The series includes one-on-one interviews, intriguing pairings and group discussions, as well as extraordinary performances, from impromptu “illustrative” moments to full band (and even multi-band) productions. Among the confirmed guests for the seven-part season are: Bono, The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Jesse Winchester, Ray LaMontagne, Nick Lowe, Levon Helm, Richard Thompson and Allen Toussaint.

NOEL GALLAGHER Attacker to Be Sentenced

MUSIC NEWS - Remember last year, when a man jumpeed on stage at an Oasis concert in Canada and attacked Noel Gallagher causing three broken ribs?  Now the attacker, Daniel Sullivan,, 47, has pled guilty to all charges and will be sentenced on February 5, 2010. The Toronto Sun reports that Sullivan claims he was drunk at the time of the incident, which happened at the Virgin Festival in Toronto, and doesn't remember anything other than jumping a fence.

All Tomorrow's Parties ATP New York Announce 2010 Event !!!

MUSIC NEWS -   The 2009 Holiday season is upon us, but it's time to talk Summer 2010 !  The ATP New York festival has announced their Labor Day weekend 2010 event at Kutshner's Country Club in Monticello.

The weekend will start off with  Don't Look Back performances, when the band will play a complete iconic album, featuring the Scientists, Sleep, Mudhoney and Iggy And The Stooges.  Saturday and Sunday's line-ups are still being finalized, so check back.  As you remember, ATP has in the past treated us to Mike Patton, Nick Cave, My Bloody Valentine and the Flaming Lips, so we're hopeful for 2010 !
