MUSIC NEWS - U2's bassist, Adam Clayton is suing his former assistant, Carol Hawkins, claiming that she stole approximately $2.5M from his accounts. On Friday, an Irish judge temporarily froze Hawkins's assets as the court heard claims that she made unapproved purchases using the bassist's money.
Paul Sreenan, one of Clayton's attorney, said Hawkins Clayton in September 2008 and admitted that she had "misappropriated" €13,000 (£11,500 / $18,424) from his bank accounts. Sreenen said Clayton handled this in "a compassionate manner" and kept her on as his assistant, though he changed some financial arrangements, presumably to prevent her access to his money! Then, in November 2009, the U2 bassist noticed another batch of discrepancies in his accounts and confronted Hawkins. She admitted using his credit and debit cards "as needed", according to the Irish Times.
Clayton's accountants examined his books and suspect that Hawkins embezzled as much as $850 twice a day for nearly 13 months, spending the money on cars, vacations, jewelery, an apartment in New York and investing in a syndicate that maintains horses. Hawkins has reportedly denied the figure. And, finally, she was fired by Clayton.
