MUSIC NEWS - Now that the pop music, one-time prog rockers Genesis are going to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame this March, there's been considerable hope (MNN included) that Peter Gabriel would be part of the festivities and perform with his old band (for the first time in almost 30 years). Unfortunately, he's said that no reunion will happen (with him) and that he might not be able to attend the ceremony!
He recently told Rolling Stone: "As far as I know, I'm definitely not going to sing. I learned at our last reunion (in 1982) that you can't just get up there. You have to rehearse". Rehearsals for his upcoming European solo tour will conflict with the "Hall" ceremony, making any rehearsals for a reunion performance impossible. In fact, just getting to the awards festivities in NYC will be difficult for him. He said: "I'm trying to find a way to do it. It's not easy. If I can work it out, I'll go".
When asked if any possibilities of a GENESIS reunion exist at all, he said that the band met up five years ago to discuss the possibility, but his reluctance on and, now, Phil Collin's health problems seem make it doubtful. Gabriel said: "Initially I was open to it. But then it seemed to be growing. I know what it's like once you're in it - these things tend to expand. I always describe it as going back to school, since this was a school group for me. It's a fun place to visit and see your old friends, but it's not a place you want to live. [Now] Phil has had trouble with his wrists and his back, so it's pretty unlikely [that we'd ever get back together]". No word on original guitarist, Steve Hackett's involvement in the "Hall of Fame" event either!
In related Gabriel news, he's booked a few gigs in North American as part of his orchestral-only covers album, "Scratch My Back" this spring. So far, he's booked shows in three venues, starting on April 28 in Montreal, then a pair of NYC shows (May 2 & 3) at Radio City Music Hall. The mini-tour ends May 7 at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A.
These gigs follow a slate of March performances by Gabriel in Paris, Berlin and London for "Scratch My Back," Gabriel's eighth studio album, which was produced by Bob Ezrin and is releasing February 16 (in the UK /Europe, March 2 in No America). The album will have Gabriel covering songs by other artists; David Bowie's "Heroes," Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)," Neil Young's "Philadelphia", Lou Reed's "Power of the Heart" and Paul Simon's "The Boy in the Bubble". PG also plans a future album entitled "I'll Scratch Yours" which will feature those same artists covering Gabriel's work in return.
UPDATE 2/11/10 - Peter Gabriel has now confirmed he will not attend the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in New York City next month due to a "scheduling conflict", this despite his former band Genesis being honored at the event.
