He became ill prior to show on Thursday at a jazz festival in the French mountain town of Barcelonnette and was taken to an intensive care unit in Gap, the hospital said Friday. Jarreau's British talent agent has the Grammy winning singer "became weak from the altitude" in Barcelonnette, which is in the southern Alps. "Upon medical advice, (he) was advised not to perform to allow him time to recover," Marshall Arts Ltd said in a statement, noting Mr Jarreau hopes to resume his tour next Thursday.
The Milwaukee, WI born Jarreau was conscious and breathing without assistance on Friday but remains in intensive care to receive treatment for the respiratory problems, said Maurice Marchetti, deputy director of the hospital. Doctors are reportedly uncertain what caused the problem, but believe fatigue as well as high altitude may have contributed to Jarreau's health problems.
In addition to the cancelled French show, he's canceled two concerts in Germany and another in Azerbaijan, his agent said with plans to hopefully perform again Thursday in Nuremberg, Germany.
UPDATE 7/24/10 - Mr Jarreau's been trasnferred from the Alps hospital to another in the French port city of Marseille, hospital authorities said Saturday. Jarreau was conscious, in stable condition and at the cardiology unit of La Timone hospital in Marseille, the Marseille Hospital Authority reported. He's expected to remain under care for approximately a week for tests.
UPDATE 8/01/10 - Al Jarreau was discharged from his hospital on Sunday after being treated for heart problems. He plans to continue his European tour starting on next Tuesday, hospital authorities in Marseille announced. He is due to give his next concert at Hanau, Germany, next Tuesday after three concerts were canceled last week in Germany, Austria and Slovakia.
