DEADMAU5 Collapses on Stage in DC, Cancels Upcoming Gigs

MUSIC NEWS- Last night (Friday 7/30), Grammy nominated, electronic music performer DEADMAU5 (pronounced "dead mouse") collapsed on stage at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, suffering from exhaustion. Medics from the venue took him directly to a local hospital where he is now under medical supervision.

DEADMAU5 unfortunately will be cancelling his next nine shows on his summer tour under strict advice of doctors.  The time off will allow for his recovery. Performances affected are listed below. His North American dates for October 2010 which include appearances at Austin City Limits, the Treasure Island Music Festival, Voodoo Music Festival and three nights at Roseland Ballroom in New York City are still on schedule.

BLACK EYED PEAS Make Digital Music History

MUSIC NEWS - The Black Eyed Peas have recently made music history and given more proof of the widespread popularity of their tune,  “I Gotta Feeling.”  Their #1 hit tune has become the first song to reach the 6 million mark in digital downloads. 

The music milestone was announced on Friday by the band and confirmed by Nielsen SoundScan.  They also made a NYC appearance on Good Morning America on Friday (video below).  will.i.am, the group's leader, says the moment is about much more than the song.    “We came out in ’98 and our career, if you would look at it on chart, there’s no dips in it,” he said in a phone interview Thursday. “For our career to still be healthy and vibrant and doing things like 6 million downloads, it’s pretty significant.”

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Release More Tour Details

MUSIC NEWS - Stone Temple Pilots have confirmed details of added dates on their tour of North America.
The 37-date run by the American alt rockers starts up in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 7, including a stop by Scott Weilland and company at the Surgis Rock n Rev festival in South Dakota, and as of now, wraps up in Pensacola, Florida on October 16.  

STP's on tour to promote their 2010 release, Stone Temple Pilots, entitled album (out via Atlantic Records).

MARGARET CHO's New "Cho Dependent"

Comedienne / Musician MARGARET CHO's new album, Cho Dependent (out August 24) “I want to create a new genre of music that is hilarious but also seriously good, so I turned to some of my music heroes to help me out,” says Margaret Cho talking about her upcoming album Cho Dependent. “I have wanted to make an album like this forever. IRON MAIDEN Frontman Wants Rock 'n Roll Concerts, Not Cash Cows

MUSIC NEWS - Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson recently attacked the price of concert tickets, making the suggestion that fans are paying too much.   The rocker criticized bands who charge exhorbitant prices for concert tickets, insisting that the artists only have themselves to blame for half-empty arenas and problems with the touring industry (ticket sales dropping 17%+). 

"It's a massive commitment to come and see a band," he recently told Sky News. "They deserve not just a great show, but reasonable ticket prices. It's just not right, you know - it's a rock 'n' roll show, it's not a cash cow."

Iron Maiden continues its Final Frontier tour, with concert dates in Europe through August. 

DANIEL LANOIS Admits He's Lucky to Be Alive

MUSIC NEWS - Musician / producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan) admits he's lucky to be alive after his motorcycle accident last month.  In the mishap, he broke six bones, cracked his pelvis and suffered internal bleeding in his right lung following the wreck in Los Angeles.

"I was on my bike with a friend of mine on the back and a guy coming the other way decided to turn in front of me into a variety store," he recently said to Rolling Stone.   "I veered to miss him, but I hit an industrial box on the sidewalk going 35 miles per hour. I blacked out and when I came to I was laying on my back in the parking lot and people were telling me, 'Don't move.' Then they hauled me away to a hospital and I had to lay there like a vegetable for three weeks."

GREEN DAY Returns To North America for More Concerts

MUSIC NEWS - With their sold-out stadium tour of Europe behind them, rockers Green Day will hit the road next week for a series of North American tour dates, and a TV appearance, including an August 7th stop at this year’s Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago, IL. The sows are part of the second leg of the band’s USA tour to promote their Grammy Award winning album 21st Century Breakdown (full itinerary below). The band, singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool will also perform their new single, “Last of the American Girls,” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Friday, July 30th.

The BLACK CROWES to Release "20 Years of Tall Tales" Web Series

SMASHING PUMPKINS Raise $80,000+ in Chicago Concert Benefit for Matthew Leone

MUSIC NEWS-

ThE SMASHING PUMPKINS have raised over $80,000+ (an updated figure to follow) at their sold-out benefit concert on Tuesday, July 27 at Chicago’s Metro for MADINA LAKE bassist, Matthew Leone. The money will go to the continuing medical care needed for the musician who last month was hospitalized with severe brain trauma after intervening to stop a woman he passed on the street from being beaten by her husband.  Matthew, whose medical insurance had lapsed just two months prior to the incident, was taken to UIC Hospital for emergency brain surgery that required a third of his skull be removed to alleviate swelling.  He's currently in stable condition awaiting an additional brain surgery to reapply the removed portion of his skull.

 

“The Smashing Pumpkins' benefit show at Metro Tuesday night was triumphant and tearful, inspiring and rousing, open-hearted and generous—as well as a stark reminder that sometimes it takes a village to get a crime victim adequate health care,” wrote the Chicago Tribune (7/28/10). The event was attended by Chicago mayor Pat Quinn, who proclaimed Tuesday "Matthew Leone Day" in Illinois and said, "We have a true American hero right here in Matthew Leone” (as noted in the Chicago Tribune piece).

JOHN LENNON Time Capsules to Mark His 70th B'Day

MUSIC NEWS- In commenoration of John Lennon's 70th birthday (Saturday October 9, 2010), the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum" and "BoxofVision LLC" are creating three authorized time capsules of John Lennon's post-Beatles recordings and fan contributions, which can be submitted to carry his legacy of peace and love to future generations.

With the cooperation of Yoko Ono Lennon, the time capsules will be preserved and stored until they are opened in a ceremonial presentation on October 9, 2040. The time capsules will be stored at the Rock Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, and at two additional worldwide locations that have significance to John Lennon's legacy.

Going The Distance Soundtrack Announced; Boxer Rebellion, Airborne Toxic Event, more

MUSIC NEWS - Watertower Music has just announced an August 24 release of the soundtrack to the upcoming film "Going The Distance" on CD and digital formats. The soundtrack features new music from The Boxer Rebellion and The Airborne Toxic Event, and also boasts a great mix of indie-rockers such as Cat Power, Band of Skulls, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Passion Pit, intermingled with more classic rock from The Cure, The Pretenders and The Replacements, among others. 

Ronnie Wood Plans Solo Show (of his art)

MUSIC NEWS - Ronnie Wood will be in Ohio later this year for a new solo show, but not the one you'd expect from the legendary rock guitarist (The Faces, Rolling Stones).  This show will feature his paintings and other art and will be at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH.  The exhibition will be the first for Mr Wood, 63, at a major American museum and runs Spetember 21 through November 21, 2010 with Mr Wood expected to be at the museum for a reception on opening day (maybe he'll tell you about the rumored Rolling Stones final tour in 2011-2012)

Louis Zona, the museum's chief curator and director recently described Wood's art style as lively and appealing.   The exhibition will include 30 of Wood's paintings, 22 pen-and-pencil drawings and seven mixed-media works.

JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE Out at Newport Folk Fest, ELVIS PERKINS IN !

MUSIC NEWS- From the  BAD NEWS / GOOD NEWS file!!  Sadly it's true- Justin Townes Earle cut up his hand recently and required 19 stitches to put him back together.  So, he's unable to play his 1st Newport Folk Festival this weekend in Newport, RI (Rochester, NY on 7/29 and Northampton, MA at the Iron Horse on 7/30 cancelled too).

Fortunately, the Folk Music Gods were indeed smiling. Exactly 45 minutes after receiving the news from Earle's agent, Elvis Perkins In Dearland happened to call the organizers for tickets to the festival. As good promoters to, they thought fast and upped Elvis one...and asked if they would like to play the treasured music fest, and they said YES!!!!

So, without further ado, please welcome ELVIS PERKINS IN DEARLAND to the 2010 Newport Folk Festival Lineup!  Also watch for Elvis supporting Norah Jones on some August tour dates.
