MUSIC NEWS - Richie Hayward, 64, the original drummer for Little Feat, died onThursday after a long battle with cancer. Before the Feat, Hayward worked with The Family Of Man and The Factory, which is where he met future Little Feat frontman Lowell George (dead since 1979). The two joined up with Bill Payne and Roy Estrada and formed the original Little Feat in 1969.
Last year, Hayward announced that he had been diagnosed with liver cancer and died at a hospital near Vancouver, Canada, after complications of pneumonia, his NYC publicist at Metropolitan Talent, Bridget Nolan, confirmed Friday. Nolan said; "He was waiting for a liver transplant,". Over the past year, benefits had been staged on Hayward's behalf as he had no health insurance, with one benefit concert announced as recently as five days ago.
The band posted the following message on its Facebook page late yesterday-
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our dear friend, drummer extraordinare and founding member of Little Feat, Richie Hayward, lost his courageous battle with liver cancer today. He was loved by so so many and will be missed dearly. Not only the music world, but the entire world, lost a truly great one today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Shauna, all his family and his brothers in the band. RIP Richie.”
