“Tell Me Something Good” brings ETHEL and Rundgren together as they draw material and inspiration from the sounds and scenes of the 1970’s, a restless, intelligent, dissatisfied time, a decade of contradictions, a decade of loss, a decade of discovery aka "The 'Me' Decade." This vibrant program celebrates the decade of the 1970’s, the decade that birthed the best known iteration of the inimitable Todd Rundgren.
"Todd is known for pushing himself beyond what we're used to seeing. ETHEL is punk and classical. It's both challenging and accessible," said Katherine Knowles, Zeiterion Performing Arts Center's Chief Executive Officer. The thrilling collaboration of ETHEL and Rundgren (electric and acoustic guitars, ukulele, piano) is surprising fans with groundbreaking compositions and nontraditional improvisation. Both artists are pulling from their own vast catalogs as well as performing collaborative repertoire including but, not limited to, arrangements of I Saw the Light, Flamingo, Zen Archer, Stood Up, Black Maria, and Lord Chancellor’s Nightmare Song, just to name a few. Steered by Todd’s vocal delivery, ETHEL recreates intricate vocal backgrounds on strings, swooping and sliding through the daredevil stop-and-start melodies wringing every drop of emotion out of each song.
The two first toured together in 2005 with Joe Jackson in what was described as an
explosive, beautiful and spine-tingling, divine performance that had many fans in tears. ETHEL and Rundgren found a deep connection and ongoing friendship in their passion for authenticity and their curiosity about what’s emerging.
